2019 Landour Mela #6

The year was 2019, and as the sun emerged on the horizon, painting the hillsides of Mussoorie in warm hues of gold, it heralded a new and exhilarating chapter for the Landour Mela. The air was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of pine and the promise of adventure, which created a perfect backdrop for this beloved event. Under the inspired leadership of Shri Abhishek Rathore (IDES), the former CEO of the Cantt. Board, the Mela transitioned into an official celebration—one that would forever be cherished, loved, and recognised as the “Landour Mela in association with the Landour Cantt. Board."

The inauguration by CEO was a momentous occasion, marked by the presence of distinguished guests including the chief guest, Shri Ravikant Chopra, the Ex-DG of Defence States. With his charismatic presence and words of encouragement, he amplified the excitement, inspiring both locals and visitors alike. The steady hand of SDM Mussoorie, Shri Vikas Chaudhry ensured that the event flowed seamlessly, like a gentle stream winding through the valley, managing traffic and visitors with grace and precision—a delightful experience for all who attended.

Stalls brimming with farm-fresh groceries and artisanal foods beckoned, showcasing the best of local produce. Handmade woollens and accessories caught the sunlight, inviting admiration with their earthy textures and colours. Organic pickles, fragrant oils, and natural body care products echoed the region’s ability to nurture both people and nature alike. Art enthusiasts found their haven in breathtaking paintings and intricate handicrafts, each piece an expression of the artisan's passion for creativity. Garhwali food stalls scattered throughout the Mela allowed visitors to indulge in the authenticity of local flavours, while the renowned delicacies of the Char Dukaan drew long lines of eager patrons yearning for a taste of history.

As the sun reached its zenith, the Landour Mela transformed into a buzzing hub of joy and celebration. Heritage walks, organised by the dedicated team from BTDT?, invited participants to step back in time. Enthusiastic groups revelled in the tales spun by skilled walk specialists, wandering through the enchanting lanes of Landour. Each step was paired with history, each corner of the path a window into a captivating past. By the end of the walks, smiles lit the faces of both international visitors and local participants, celebrating not just the beauty of the hills but also the rich tapestry of stories woven into the culture.

As 2019 unfolded, the Landour Mela carved its niche as a cherished ritual, celebrated every year during the Christmas holidays. What began as a modest, independent gathering blossomed into an iconic emblem of culture, joy, and unity, welcoming hearts from far and wide. The embodiment of tradition intertwined with modernity, the Landour Mela stood as a testament to the community’s spirit—a beacon of festive cheer amid the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas.
